ESG Reporting, Demystified
ESG reporting frameworks are written for organizations several sizes larger than the ones I usually work with. That doesn't mean small and mid-size organizations should ignore ESG reporting — it means they need a version scaled to what they can actually maintain year over year.
Report what you can verify, not what looks complete
A short report built on metrics the organization can actually track every year outperforms a comprehensive one built once and never updated. I'd rather see five verified metrics with a consistent methodology than twenty estimated ones.
Start here
- Energy and waste basics you already meter
- Workforce composition you already report to HR/payroll
- Governance policies you already have in writing
Wait on this
- Full Scope 3 emissions inventories
- Third-party assurance
- Framework-specific disclosures (GRI, SASB) before you have two years of consistent data
“The best first ESG report is the one you can repeat next year without starting over.”
